Dates: (6 Thursdays) October 5 to November 9

Course Description:
This course will cover addictions as completely as possible. We will look at definitions, misconceptions, alternative understandings, and the human tendency toward addictions. Two physicians, who come from different perspectives, along with The Great Courses films on Addiction and the Brain, will offer material for group discussion. As humans, we tend to adopt "beliefs" that seem offer the correct way to look at a subject. We will respectfully disagree at times. We will look at how addictions are tolerated or not, in society. How does the mind "make sense" of what the brain puts out to control our behaviors? Where do “soft sciences” enter the picture along with the medical model? Why does our society have such vast problems with addictions? How can Public Health make a difference? We won't solve the problems, but we will end, knowing more than when we started.
