October 5 – October 29
Northwind Arts Center presents Smile: Humor and Whimsy, a juried show celebrating the amusing, fantastical, incongruous and satirical in art.
Juror Kathleen Moles, curator at the Museum of Northwest Art, selected 70 pieces from 53 artists from Clallam, Jefferson, Kitsap and Island counties. "Many things make us smile; in general I looked for a sense of lightness, staying away from darker humor. The absurd, the curious and often animals can make us smile." From 195 pieces submitted, Moles chose a variety of 3-d and 2-d works including sculpture, fiber, photography, painting and printmaking.
Award winners include Juror's Choice, "Glitter Bomb" by Julie Read. Moles comments that "this painting is an example of dark comedy, an incongruous mixing of frame, image and media, beautifully executed."
Three merit awards went to Janice Speck for her felt piece "Felix the Flat Cat"; Jeff Lark for his sculpture "Stroll"; and to Yukio Iraha for his collage "Hide and Seek I".
Moles will give a talk on the show and her selections on Sunday, October 8 at 1:00 PM.
There will be an opening reception at Gallery Walk, Saturday, October 7 from 5:30 to 8:00 pm. Northwind Arts Center is located at 701 Water Street, Port Townsend. Open Wednesday - Monday, 11:30 to 5:30.
