Northwind Book Arts: Broken Broadsides

How do you “break” a poetry broadside? Myrna Keliher, letterpress printer and poetry publisher, will take us through the process of creating Broken Broadsides—plus explain what a broadside is and why we need them. Join her at the Winter meeting of the Northwind Book Arts Group on Wednesday, January 17, from 7 until 9, at the Northwind Arts Center, 701 Water Street, Port Townsend.

Keliher is an artist, designer, printer, publisher and proprietor of Expedition Press in Kingston, Washington. She publishes poetry books, broadsides, and visual art with a typographic focus. In 2017, the Expedition Press published, Passing, by Holly Hughes, a winner in the 38th Annual American Book Awards. In addition to printing chapbooks and broadsides in collaboration with local poets, Keliher creates distinctive broadsides as premiums for Kickstarter campaigns in association with Copper Canyon Press. She states that “the mission of Expedition Press to deepen regard for language and to increase access to poetry.”

Keliher holds a B.A. degree from The Evergreen State College, and she apprenticed with Stern & Faye, Printers. Her work is exhibited both nationally and internationally and is collected by the University of Washington. She travels regularly to teach, speak, study, and collaborate, Her interdisciplinary work is shown at Core Gallery in Seattle. In her spare time she helps run Wild Society, a wilderness education nonprofit.

The Northwind Book Arts Group is dedicated to exploring and cultivating contemporary aesthetic interpretations of the book as art, while preserving the traditional practices involved in the creations of books and while providing a forum for exchange among fine printers, typographers, binders and artists in and around Port Townsend and the Kitsap and Olympic Peninsulas. Open to all with an interest in artist’s books, fine printing and paper.
